Scaling Citrix XenApp 6.5 on AWS

Deploying Citrix XenApp on Amazon Web Services (AWS) combines the benefits of virtualized application and desktop delivery with the advantages of cloud computing. Building a XenApp farm on AWS creates a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solution that allows instantaneous application and desktop provisioning. This capability often eases IT’s efforts to cope with workload spikes and business changes such as reorganizations, mergers, and acquisitions. Delivering XenApp application and desktop services from an AWS cloud is cost-efficient because it’s strictly a “pay-for-what-you-use” model that doesn’t require an up-front investment. Depending on your application stack and system requirements, the price point for delivering application…

Jumpstarting your XenApp 6.5 Farm in AWS with a CloudFormation Template

Is your XenApp farm in the Cloud? Have you thought about putting it there? If it only took a few hours to create a XenApp farm in the cloud, would you consider cloud service delivery for your apps and desktops? In case you are new to Amazon Web Services (AWS), you should know that Citrix has recently released a whitepaper and a CloudFormation template that can get you up and running with your very own XenApp farm in as little as three hours. This CloudFormation template uses publicly available Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) and snapshots to build a basic farm…

How to Build a XenApp Farm Using a CloudFormation Template

I recently released a blog and associated white paper titled “Jumpstarting your XenDesktop Farm in AWS with a CloudFormation Template” in which I introduced a CloudFormation template that can be used to create a small XenApp farm for hosted shared desktops.  At the end of the blog, I promised to record a video demonstrating how to use the AWS CloudFormation script. That video blog is now available on Citrix TV or YouTube. My next blog, due out soon, will describe the CloudFormation template used in the video. The template we used is both availability zone- and region-aware. I’m currently in the process of…

Announcing the Multi-Region AWS CloudFormation Template for XenApp

Since I first introduced a CloudFormation template in the blog  “Jumpstarting your XenDesktop Farm in AWS with a CloudFormation Template,” we have received numerous requests from readers to update the template to support multiple Regions and Availability Zones. In recent weeks we’ve been laying the groundwork to satisfy these requests — copying the appropriate Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) to all the Regions and updating the CloudFormation JSON template to use the newly copied AMIs in each Region. These AMIs have also been updated to tackle some of the timeout issues that were seen with the originals AMIs. Today we are…

XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 Reference Architecture on AWS

Just as I had done in the past for XenApp 6.5, I’m now able to announce the availability of the Reference Architecture (RA) for XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 on AWS. It took lots of late nights (or early mornings, depending on your perspective) with my friends over at AWS in Seattle and intercontinental teamwork, what with me working from my cabine up in the Alps in Italy. Yes, there have already been –for over a year–a set of tools that allows you to spin up a XenApp or XenDesktop 7.5/7.6 Farm on AWS using CloudFormation technology. However, that CloudFormation template is aimed mainly at…
